Poll: Moving forward: drop VS 2005 support or not?

Postby Sergey » January 1st, 2009, 2:17 pm

It's that time again. :)

As more developers migrate to VS 2008, VS 2005 becomes much less relevant. Add VS 2008's target framework feature, which can be used to support older .NET 2.0 applications, and writing is on the wall for VS 2005.

So, please cast your vote. Thanks.

The poll's closed now. Thanks for all of your submissions.

The results show that about half of the participants can part with it. As expected though, the real numbers are much higher and is what confirmed by web site statistics. It clearly shows a steady decline in VS 2005 vs. VS 2008 downloads.

VS 2005 will continue to be supported until VS 2010 release, which I think will happen sometime in October-December of 2009 time frame. In other words, once VS 2010 is out, VS 2005 won't be supported anymore.
