Visual Studio 2015 Preview support?

Postby Imi » November 19th, 2014, 8:40 am

Hi,

Any chance of building a version that supports Visual Studio 2015 Preview? I could live with a beta with restricted feature set, crashing over now and then.. as long as some parts work :D

Sure, I can give it a shot next long break I get. Looks like SDK has been posted already.

That'd be awesome.. Missing DPack is currently the only thing keeping me from enjoying VS2015 :)

DPack 3.9.1 (Beta 1) for VS 2015 Preview is posted at about 882Kb. It wasn't too bad to convert to support VS 2015. I did do a cursory run through the feature set and all seems to be working fine. Keep in mind, even though keyboard schemes are included they are from VS 2013 so I'm not sure if they are 100% compatible or not.

Give it a try and let me know if you run into any issues. Thanks.

Seems to work fine here so far. :)

I mostly use the FileBrowser and the CodeBrowser and they behave exactly like in previous VS versions.

The delay until the FileBrowser opens is a lot longer now. In VS2012 in my project, it was around 100ms, now its very recognizable, maybe 300ms to 500ms and sporadically around 1-2s. Mode option is set to "Dialog mode". Setting for typical solution sizes to "Very large", 30.000+ files in the solution.

But that's still bearable, because keyboard strokes are accepted until the dialog opens. Of course, "Tool mode" is not affected as its always open ;). And I guess its rather a problem of VS, as many other UI things seem to be a lot more delayed (while others are blazingly fast now, like the "find references" search)

Thanks for the great work. :)

Wow, 30K is a lot of files in one solution. Disclaimer: I do run it in a single core VM. In any case, VS 2015 performance seems to be alpha quality IMHO. I see that once my large 1500 files solution's loaded, it takes it sometime to stop maxing out the CPU.

I've enabled logging for both my host VS 2013 DPack and 2015 one. Comparing 2 logs (Tools|DPack, General->Open log folder, FileBrowser.log) nothing jumps at me on 2015 version other than individual projects file code model processing just taking longer.

In all honesty, I'd let them come up Beta version before I jump to conclusions. If it's still slow I can take a look at it to see if there is anything going on DPack side.

Almost all of the files are data files. "only" 4200 files are .cs. ;)

We moved them to a different solution now and everthing is fast again. :)

I'd suggest double checking those data file properties "Build Action" to make sure it's set to either None or Content. That should speed up the processing too. And I meant to mention that if you do use Git, VS 2015 seemed to be more annoying than VS 2013 persisting source provider state after each restart. That slows down solution loading as well as code editor. HTH.

Sorry I didn't get a chance to get to it earlier. I've unfortunately lost my VS 2015 VM and will need to re-do the effort. Give me another week or so to get that done. I'll keep you posted. Thanks.

I've just posted a CTP compatible version for you: DPack 3.9.1 (Beta 1) for VS 2015 CTP. Sorry it took me a while to get it done. Let me know if you run into any issues. Thanks.
